Bahçeli had brought it up for the first time... A joint mechanism for the separatist terrorist organization PKK's disarmament process: MIT at the table with Syria and Iraq

The terrorist organization PKK announced in a statement on May 12 that it had decided to lay down its arms and dissolve itself. This development followed the call made by Abdullah Öcalan to the organization on February 27 to lay down arms and dissolve.

However, despite the organization's public statement, no concrete steps have been taken yet. Security sources state that efforts are ongoing to completely disarm the PKK in the designated areas.

MIT TO ACT JOINTLY WITH IRAQ AND SYRIA

According to reports in Turkey, the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) is conducting negotiations to establish a joint mechanism with the central government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in Iraq to coordinate the disarmament process. It was also learned that contacts are continuing in the Syrian theater.

While it is stated that significant progress has been made in the negotiations, it is expressed that this joint mechanism aims to completely disarm the organization in the areas where the PKK operates. It was noted that the process is planned to be completed by the beginning of September 2025.

BAHÇELİ’S COMMISSION PROPOSAL ON THE AGENDA

To ensure the disarmament process is also evaluated on a political platform, MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli had proposed the establishment of a structure within the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) called the "National Unity and Solidarity Commission." Bahçeli requested that all political parties appoint members to this commission and that it be chaired by the Speaker of the Parliament, Numan Kurtulmuş.

It is noteworthy that different dates are being discussed in political circles regarding this proposal. According to Bahçeli's proposal, the commission in question is planned to be established on October 1, when the Parliament begins its new legislative year.

According to the report by Gerçek Gündem based on AKP sources, it is stated that the commission could be established after the disarmament process is completed. In this context, it is being evaluated that a step could be taken for the commission before the Parliament goes on summer recess.

İYİ PARTY DOES NOT SUPPORT

While many political parties, primarily the CHP, AKP, MHP, and HEDEP, have approached the idea of the commission positively so far, it is observed that the İYİ Party does not support the process. Party officials have serious reservations regarding the function and scope of this commission.

For this reason, it is estimated that if the commission is established, the İYİ Party will not take part, while other parties will determine their members and play an active role in the process.

RESULTS ARE AWAITED

The process that began with Öcalan's call has entered a new phase with the organization's statement on May 12. While there is intense traffic in the field and in politics to concretely implement the laying down of arms, the public is closely following how the process will take shape.

Whether the arms will truly be laid down, the effectiveness of the joint mechanism to be established by the MIT, and whether the proposed commission under the roof of the TBMM will be established will become clear in the coming weeks.
