İstanbul Kent University faculty member and retired Staff Colonel Çağlar Özer made important assessments regarding the ongoing process between the government and the Imralı delegation.
Özer stated that the process is entering an increasingly difficult period and that the expectations between the parties have diverged significantly.
"THERE IS TROUBLE BETWEEN THE DELEGATION AND THE STATE"
In his statement to Sözcü TV, Özer recalled that the process, which began with the move by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli on October 22, gained momentum with the steps taken by the President, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and other state officials.
Stating that a call for disarmament was made to elements within the organization through a letter penned by the terrorist leader in Imralı, Özer pointed out that there are serious communication problems between the parties in this process.
Özer used the expression, "When it comes to the fourth meeting held with Imralı, it is seen that the parties are experiencing serious difficulties in understanding each other."
"DEM PARTY'S DEMANDS TOUCH THE NERVE ENDINGS OF SOCIETY"
Evaluating the state's approach to the process, Özer said, "The state has taken steps to end the 40-year-old terror problem and has clearly declared that there will be no give-and-take process and no bargaining."
In contrast, he stated that the attitudes and statements of the DEM Party reflected in the public sphere are of a nature that would damage the sensitivities of society.
"DEMANDS INCLUDE A '4-PART KURDISTAN' AND IMPROVEMENT OF IMRALI CONDITIONS"
Özer conveyed that the demands put forward by the DEM Party include topics such as a "4-part Kurdistan," "federalism," and the improvement of prison conditions for the terrorist leader in Imralı.
He even pointed out that some circles are voicing demands for the terrorist leader to be released and placed at the head of a so-called congress.
"ALTHOUGH IT IS SAID THE PROCESS IS POSITIVE, THE PROBLEMS ARE DEEPENING"
Özer emphasized that although statements are made in the public sphere that the process is progressing "positively," the pain the terrorist organization has caused Turkey in the past has not been forgotten and society is quite sensitive about this issue.
Özer said, "We see that the process is progressing on a very fragile ground both politically and socially. This reality should not be ignored."
