In recent days, earthquake activity in Turkey has increased. Earthquakes have occurred consecutively in the Mediterranean and Marmara regions. On December 21 at 20:31, a magnitude 3 earthquake occurred in Avcılar, and on December 22, a magnitude 3.5 earthquake occurred off the coast of Marmara Ereğlisi.

On the same day, two earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.1 and 4.7 were recorded in the Mediterranean. According to the active fault line map of the MTA, there are 485 active faults in Turkey.

Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made important statements regarding the earthquakes in Marmara and the Mediterranean.

Drawing attention to the Hellenic-Cyprus Arc, Görür emphasized that earthquakes reaching a magnitude of 8 are possible in this region. Görür also pointed to stress accumulation on the Adalar and Kumburgaz faults in the Sea of Marmara on the northern branch of the North Anatolian Fault, stating that the expected earthquake here could be magnitude 7.5. The earthquake expert also identified the two branches in Marmara where earthquakes are expected.

"AS IF EVERYTHING WILL END WHEN IT HAPPENS..."

It is as if we are waiting for an earthquake, and as if everything will end when it happens... First of all, let us underline that Turkey is entirely an earthquake country by geography. The earthquakes happening today began approximately 14 million years ago and have been occurring for 14 million years. They will continue for millions of years more. The earthquake in the Mediterranean is on the Hellenic-Cyprus arc, which we call the Pliny-Strabo. Earthquakes already occur at plate boundaries as a result of plate movements. Larger earthquakes occur here. When the recurrence period of the fault in that subduction zone is completed, it will trigger much larger earthquakes. This zone has produced earthquakes close to 8 in past centuries.

"FAULTS ARE LOCKED"

The faults we mention in Marmara; whether in Tekirdağ or Çanakkale, these are earthquakes below 4. They occurred on the northern branch of the North Anatolian Fault.

We are already expecting an earthquake on this branch within the Sea of Marmara. We are expecting earthquakes on two branches here; one is the Adalar Fault, which is south of the Princes' Islands; the other is the fault we call the Kumburgaz Fault, which extends from off the coast of Silivri to the Central Marmara. These faults are currently locked faults; they are accumulating stress.

The North Anatolian Fault; if it is to produce an earthquake, it will produce it through these faults. It is extremely natural for it to crackle and create small earthquakes. This shows us that it is alive and accumulating stress.

One day, when it breaks with a snap, it will create that major earthquake we are expecting.

The earthquake we are expecting will be at most magnitude 7.5. All the research we have conducted points to this.
