Earthquake warning of magnitude 7.5 from Prof. Dr. Ercan! He identified the risky areas
The increasing number of earthquakes in and around Muğla is causing fear among the local population. Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated that the activity on the Gökova Fault is linked to the northward movement of the African continent and issued a warning regarding major earthquakes. Ercan stated that the accumulation of stress in the region could lead to serious dangers.
Recent consecutive earthquakes in the Aegean Sea have caused anxiety in Muğla and its surroundings. Tremors were recorded at a magnitude of 4.0 in Muğla's Menteşe district, 4.0 off the coast of Marmaris, and 3.5 off the coast of Bodrum. Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated that the Gökova Fault has become active again and issued important warnings.
Prof. Dr. Ercan emphasized that the primary cause of the earthquakes in the region is the northward movement of the African continent. "Africa is moving toward the Anatolian, Aegean, and Adriatic regions, increasing the stress around Muğla. This movement creates serious pressure on the southern Aegean arc and causes earthquakes," he said.
Stating that Africa's annual advance of 3 to 5 centimeters compresses Anatolia and triggers seismic activity, Ercan noted that this process has been ongoing for millions of years and will continue in the future.
7.5 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE WARNING
Prof. Dr. Ercan said that the activity on the Gökova Fault is a serious warning. Pointing out that this line, as it has in the past, could produce major earthquakes in the future, Ercan said, "The Crete-Rhodes arc region has the potential to produce earthquakes up to a magnitude of 7.5."
Stating that Turkey's deepest earthquakes occur in this region, Ercan said, "While earthquakes in other regions usually occur at a depth of 5-7 kilometers, the depth of such major earthquakes can reach up to 150 kilometers."
EARTHQUAKE STORM IN THE REGION
Stating that most of the recent earthquakes are concentrated on the Gökova Fault, Ercan explained that this fault line starts from the Ula district and extends along the northern coast of the Gulf of Gökova to Bodrum.
Reminding that the earthquakes experienced in Bodrum in 2017 were also on this fault line, Ercan said, "An 'earthquake storm' is currently being observed in the region. Although such activity does not necessarily point to an imminent major earthquake, there is a serious accumulation of stress in the region."
Ercan stated that one should be particularly careful regarding the region between the Gulf of Gökova and Fethiye-Marmaris. Expressing that the stress accumulation in this region could result in a major earthquake at some point, Ercan emphasized that citizens should take precautions.
Ercan issued warnings by saying, "There is no rule that a major earthquake will occur after every earthquake storm. However, the stress in the region could be a harbinger of a major earthquake in the long term."
