Even AKP members don't understand: Decisions made by the Palace are causing unease within the party

As the investigation into Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu continues to be debated in the public eye, Nefes newspaper columnist Deniz Zeyrek has penned an article.

While drawing attention to the political effects of the potential imprisonment process for İmamoğlu, Zeyrek made his most striking observation regarding the fracture within the AKP.

According to what Zeyrek conveyed in his column, even high-level AKP figures are now finding it difficult to understand the decisions and practices coming out of the Palace.

In his article, Zeyrek included the statement, "Even the leading figures of the AK Party are struggling to understand the decisions made and the steps taken at the Külliye."

In his article, Zeyrek also cited statements regarding the expansion of the powers of governors and district governors as an example.

He noted that despite President Erdoğan's statements in this direction, AKP staff have stated that there is no such preparation or work underway.

Stating that this situation contradicts the party's understanding of democracy and local government, Zeyrek pointed out that a serious disconnect has formed between the Külliye and the AKP cadres.

İMAMOĞLU INVESTIGATION COULD COST THE GOVERNMENT DEARLY

Zeyrek also said in his article that the imprisonment of İmamoğlu could backfire on the government. "If the perception that İmamoğlu is being imprisoned solely because he is a presidential candidate solidifies both domestically and internationally, the process could make the government's job even more difficult," said Zeyrek, emphasizing that the perception forming in society is developing rapidly against the ruling power.

Deniz Zeyrek stated that there is a serious difference in understanding between the cadres who brought the AKP to power and today's decision-makers. Expressing that the bond with the public has been broken, Zeyrek said, "There are great distances between the perspective of the AK Party cadres who formed that bond—regarding life, democracy, and the supremacy of the national will—and the perspective of the current decision-makers."
