Everyone was waiting for April... No dissolution decision from the terrorist organization PKK: Why wasn't the expected step taken?

In the new process that began after MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli's call from Parliament on October 22, eyes had turned to the transformation of Abdullah Öcalan's call for the organization to lay down arms and dissolve into concrete steps.

However, the expected progress could not be achieved. The process remains uncertain despite the İmralı visits by the DEM Party delegation and the positive messages from the government.

THE ORGANIZATION WAS EXPECTED TO DISSOLVE ITSELF IN APRIL

According to behind-the-scenes information, following the contacts between President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the DEM Party delegation, it was expected that the PKK would convene an extraordinary congress at the end of April to decide on dissolution, and that a regulation including the "right to hope" for Abdullah Öcalan would be brought to the agenda immediately afterward.

THE EXPECTED STEP WAS NOT TAKEN

Media outlets close to the government had also predicted last weekend that a dissolution decision would come from the organization and had reported in that direction. However, the expected step was not taken. No official statement was made by the organization, nor was a clear calendar or detail shared regarding the disarmament and dissolution process.

The reason why the dissolution decision was not taken emerged with a statement made by Qandil. The statement indicated that for Abdullah Öcalan's call for disarmament and dissolution on February 27 to be implemented, a change in the current conditions at İmralı is awaited. It was emphasized that it is desired for Öcalan to reach "conditions where he can live and work freely" and become able to personally manage the party congress.

On the other hand, the PKK's upcoming May 1 statement also included important details regarding the process. Referring to the optimistic statements of the DEM Party İmralı delegation about the process, the statement included the following: "There is no concrete development that has reached us yet to realize what was stated in the February 27 call. We hope that this situation will change and that Leader Apo will reach conditions where he can live and work freely and become able to manage the party congress that everyone is eagerly awaiting."
