Fraudsters' latest target is Akın Gürlek! Chief Public Prosecutor's Office confirms

According to a column published by journalist Murat Ağırel in the Cumhuriyet newspaper, some prosecutors, including Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek, have been targeted by a "Berlin Embassy" fraud scheme.

On July 1, 2025, a prosecutor in Istanbul received a call on their internal line. The caller, identifying themselves as the "Berlin Ambassador," claimed that Ramazan Erkul, whose name appeared in an illegal betting investigation, was innocent and requested that the prosecutor make a favorable assessment.

The prosecutor stated that there was a confidentiality order on the file and did not provide any information. However, the supposed ambassador persistently requested the prosecutor's mobile phone number. The suspicious situation was immediately reported to the Berlin Legal Counsel's Office.

FRAUD VIANUMBERCLONING METHOD

The nextday, the prosecutor'smobile phone was called from a number with a +49 country code. During the conversation,which wason speakerphone,thecontents of the file regarding Ramazan Erkul werequeriedagain. Upon checking the number, it was understood that the call wasmade to appear as if ittruly belonged to theBerlinEmbassy.

In other words, the network was trying to deceiveprosecutors andjudges usinga "numbercloning" method.method.

"THEY ALSO CALLED CHIEF PROSECUTOR GÜRLEK"

The fraud attempt was not limited to this incident alone. It emerged that Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek was also called using the same method. Gürlek, suspicious of the situation, contacted the Berlin Legal Counsel's Office and confirmed that the incident was a fraud attempt.

It was reported that similar attempts also occurred at the Bakırköy Courthouse.

According to Ağırel, it is alleged that the suspects are acting as an organized structure and attempting to intervene in cases. It is claimed that this network is trying to exert pressure on judges and prosecutors under the guise of embassy identity, and even attempting to obtain information in favor of criminal organization members.

Journalist Murat Ağırel drew attention to the gravity of the situation in his article, stating the following:

"If these individuals have the audacity to try and defraud even prosecutors, what wouldn't they do to ordinary citizens! Those who try to manipulate the scales of justice will eventually be crushed by the game they have created themselves. Because justice, even if delayed, finds the truth."
