Hot development in Syria: Russia is withdrawing its bases in southern Syria
It has been reported that Russian military convoys are leaving their bases in southern Syria and moving toward the Tartus military base in Latakia. While the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights states that Russian forces are withdrawing from bases in the Raqqa countryside, satellite imagery shows the Russian military packing up its equipment.
Russia is reorganizing its military presence in Syria. According to US media, Russian military convoys were seen on December 13 near the village of Shinshar, heading north on the Damascus-Homs highway.
The vehicles in the convoy included tanks and armored personnel carriers that had previously been stationed in the southern regions of Syria.
RUSSIA IS WITHDRAWING TO LATAKIA
The withdrawal movement from southern Syria toward the Tartus military base in Latakia has also been confirmed by videos shared on social media. The SOHR stated that Russian forces left the Ayn Issa and Tel al-Saman bases in the Raqqa countryside on December 12. An official speaking to US media stated that all Russian naval vessels had left Syria's Tartus port earlier this week.
The presence of Russian forces in Syria was reshaped following the fall of the Assad administration. Initially gathering in Qudsaya near Damascus, Russian forces later withdrew to the Hmeimim airbase and the port of Tartus.
Satellite imagery released by the remote sensing technology company Maxar showed the Russian military packing up its equipment at a military airbase in Syria.
RUSSIAN FRIGATES ALSO DRAW ATTENTION
The images also show two Antonov An-124s, one of the world's largest cargo aircraft, waiting at the Hmeimim airbase in the Syrian city of Latakia, while a Ka-52 attack helicopter is being dismantled and prepared for transport. Additionally, Russian frigates sailing off the Syrian coast are also drawing attention.
Russia's process of withdrawing its military bases in Syria came to the agenda following the departure of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from the country.
