Israeli press reports: PKK laying down arms could shift the balance in Syria
Analyses in the Israeli media suggest that the terrorist organization PKK laying down its arms could affect power dynamics in Syria and potentially pose a threat to Israel's interests.
According to commentary in the Israeli press, the call by terrorist organization PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan for the group to lay down its arms and dissolve itself could alter the balance of power in the region. It is noted that this situation could increase Turkey's influence in the region while potentially harming Israel's interests.
An analysis published in the Haaretz newspaper stated, "A possible ceasefire could change power dynamics in Syria and challenge Israel's presence in the country." The analysis recalled that Syrian airspace had been kept open to Israel in the past, emphasizing that if Turkey were to take control instead of Moscow, Israel could lose access to that airspace.
COULD ACCELERATE US WITHDRAWAL FROM SYRIA
The analysis commented that the PKK laying down its arms could dramatically shift balances in Syria and encourage the US to withdraw its troops from the region. Although Ferhad Abdi Şahin, one of the leaders of the PKK/YPG—which uses the name SDF—argued that Öcalan's call was not directed at them, it was noted that the organization faces the risk of losing US support. In such a scenario, it was recorded that the organization might be forced to bow to the demands of the Syrian administration.
On the other hand, analyses in Channel 14 and Yedioth Ahronoth newspapers stated that these developments would deeply affect the balances in Syria and Northern Iraq and could create a change in Turkey's stance.
TURKEY'S OPERATIONS MAY INCREASE
According to an assessment published in The Jerusalem Post, it was emphasized that if the PKK/YPG does not respond to Turkey's call, Ankara could initiate more comprehensive operations to completely eliminate the organization. It was also noted that if the US changes its policy in the region, the organization could be forced to reach a compromise with the Syrian administration.
The Israeli press assesses that the process could strengthen Turkey's role in the region and jeopardize Israel's presence in Syria.
