Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy lists Istanbul's districts with the most solid and worst ground

Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy made statements regarding what might happen in a potential Istanbul earthquake during a broadcast he attended.

Listing the best areas in Istanbul in terms of soil, Üşümezsoy said the following:

"The sections extending toward Aydos, Çamlıca, and Kadıköy are solid. The ridge sections of Maltepe and Kartal are very solid. There are weak spots on the Bostancı coast. The upper regions are solid. That is why everyone went there, and no green space was left."

Noting that the worst soil in Istanbul begins from Bakırköy, Üşümezsoy continued as follows:

"The Istanbul coast of the Sea of Marmara is composed of this formation. It starts from further ahead of Topkapı, from Yenikapı, and also covers Zeytinburnu and Ataköy. It comes all the way to Çekmece. Now, new housing complexes have been built. Bahçeşehir to the north of Esenyurt, and the part right next to it up to Sazlıbosna."

If a magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurs in these places, it easily causes slippage in Silivri and Kumburgaz. The building on top slides downward. Even now, because landslides cause slippage there, the foundations of the buildings are left unsupported. They are driving bored piles so that they do not slide due to landslides. In such an earthquake, these would slide downward. From that perspective, it is risky.”
