Striking claim regarding presidential candidacy in CHP: They will definitely take action

The Republican People's Party (CHP) held its 21st Extraordinary Congress at the Nazım Hikmet Culture Center in Yenimahalle, Ankara, under the slogan "The Will Belongs to the Nation." The party leadership had decided to move the congress to an earlier date in the face of risks of appointed trustees and political pressure.

At the congress, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel ran as a candidate again. Among his rivals, Ümit Uysal and Berhan Şimşek, Uysal withdrew, stating, "I will not pursue my candidacy in order not to damage my party."

Berhan Şimşek was disqualified from the race because he could not submit his application on time. Thus, Özel competed as the sole candidate.

RECEIVED THE VOTES OF 1,171 DELEGATES, RENEWED HIS MANDATE

Out of a total of 1,323 delegates, 1,276 cast their votes. Following the count, Özgür Özel was re-elected as CHP Chairman with 1,171 valid votes. 105 votes were declared invalid. With this result, Özel emerged from the congress strengthened.

A NEW DEBATE BEGINS

As soon as the congress concluded, eyes turned once again to Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. The question of whether İmamoğlu, who was arrested and sent to Marmara Prison following an investigation launched against him, can be the CHP's presidential candidate is being debated.

Regarding this potential scenario being discussed in CHP circles, BİZİM TV Editor-in-Chief Şaban Sevinç made striking statements. Sevinç used the following expressions:

“The government carried out a legal and political coup against presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu and threw him in prison. Özgür Özel says, 'We will get Ekrem İmamoğlu out of the dungeon and stand him against Erdoğan.' The CHP will proceed along this line until the election calendar. However, if İmamoğlu is still inside during the candidacy application period and the diploma issue has not been resolved, in that case, Özgür Özel himself may emerge as the candidate.”
