Striking details from the Erdoğan-DEM summit: Those topics were never discussed!
Striking demands were brought to the agenda during the first meeting between President Erdoğan and the DEM Party delegation at Beştepe in 13 years. The topics discussed at the summit, as well as those that were never brought up, drew attention. Here are the details...
Attention in Ankara politics turned yesterday to the historic meeting held at Beştepe. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan received the delegation of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) after a 13-year hiatus. The summit, which began at 1:30 PM, lasted approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes.
While MIT Chief İbrahim Kalın and AK Party Deputy Chairman Efkan Ala accompanied the meeting at Beştepe, the DEM Party was represented by co-chair Pervin Buldan and Group Deputy Chairman Sırrı Süreyya Önder.
Gazete Korkusuz columnist Can Coşkun shared insider information regarding the meeting. Stating that he had "learned quite a few details," Coşkun noted that the process is at a new threshold and evaluated the developments with the phrase, "We will see how many thresholds are left to cross."
CALL FOR A DISARMAMENT TIMETABLE
According to Coşkun, President Erdoğan expressed his discomfort with the slow progress of the process during the meeting, stating that a "disarmament timetable" must be announced as soon as possible. This call became the most striking headline of the meeting.
THE ISSUE OF TRUSTEES WAS NEVER BROUGHT UP
On the other hand, it was learned that the imprisonment of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and the ongoing judicial processes, which are on the public agenda, were never brought up at the meeting. Meanwhile, it was stated that the issue of trustee appointments, which the DEM Party frequently voices, "could not be brought up."
The relevant section from Can Coşkun's article titled 'Erdoğan said, "Let the process accelerate"' is as follows:
After the hour-and-a-half meeting, I learned quite a few details from Beştepe.
I can summarize it as follows:
- Erdoğan stated that the process was moving sluggishly and demanded that a timeline for laying down arms be announced immediately.
- The judicial agenda, particularly regarding İmamoğlu, was never discussed. When the DEM delegation attempted to bring up the topic of appointed trustees, Erdoğan gave a response implying that "everything will happen in time," and the subject was not pursued.
- The İmralı delegation requested the content of the work being carried out by the Ministry of Justice regarding a partial amnesty. Erdoğan gave instructions for the headings in this draft to be shared with the DEM delegation, on the condition that they not be made public yet.
That is the word from the corridors...
This meeting is expected to accelerate the process.
We shall see how many thresholds remain to be crossed.
