Opposition groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) overthrew the Baath regime that had ruled the country for 61 years, bringing an end to its power. Following the civil war that began in 2011 and led to the loss of millions of lives, Bashar al-Assad left the country and took refuge in Russia.

THE SMUGGLED FORTUNE IS STAGGERING

The fortune Assad allegedly took with him has become a subject of debate in the international arena.

According to claims by former Syrian intelligence official Khalid Beyye, Assad smuggled out a full 135 billion dollars while fleeing the country.

It is stated that this wealth was accumulated over the years using resources collected from the Syrian people.

The fall of the regime was fueled not only by external pressures but also by internal conflicts. According to Khalid Beyye, clashes between pro-Russian and Iranian-backed generals within the regime drove the regime to total collapse, especially following the defeat in Aleppo.

The dispute that began between General Muhammad Safadli and Russia's loyal general Suheil al-Hassan led to the weakening of regime forces and the advance of opposition forces toward Damascus.

The crisis of confidence within Assad's own army before the collapse led to the execution of 273 high-ranking commanders. While these executions accelerated the internal disintegration of the regime, the final blow was dealt by opposition forces.
