Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was detained following a police raid on his home on the morning of March 19, and after a 4-day process, he was arrested on March 23 and sent to Silivri Prison.

While markets were shaken following the operation against İmamoğlu, increases in foreign exchange rates, a decline in stock market values, and a rise in Turkey's risk premium were observed.

ŞİMŞEK’S DIPLOMACY TOUR OVERSHADOWED

The foreign contacts maintained by Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek with the aim of getting the economy back on its feet have remained in the shadow of the İmamoğlu operation.

It was stated that Şimşek has been traveling from country to country for a long time, trying to rebuild investor confidence. However, it was noted that recent developments in domestic politics have reduced the impact of these steps.

Journalist Nuray Babacan, in her column in Nefes newspaper, claimed that Şimşek's search for economic resources has been rendered futile due to developments stemming from politics. According to Babacan, the political operation on March 19 was the primary factor that increased economic fragility. Furthermore, noting the ruling party's discomfort with Mehmet Şimşek, Babacan used the following expressions:

“There is no one who does not see the efforts of Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek to explain the economic program and to move forward by revising it. However, most of the problems Şimşek experiences stem from politics. Economic circles believe that Şimşek has been left alone by his party during this process.”

According to what Babacan conveyed, only two names support Şimşek in the political arena.

These names are Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz and AK Party Deputy Chairman Nihat Zeybekci. However, it was stated that these supports are not strong within the AKP either.
