Görür to Üşümezsoy: An earthquake will happen in Istanbul! 'Holding a title doesn't make you a scientist'

Geoscientist and Science Academy member Prof. Dr. Naci Görür criticized Şener Üşümezsoy, who claims he does not expect a major earthquake in Istanbul.

Prof. Dr. Naci Görür responded to earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy's statements that he does not expect a major earthquake in Istanbul without naming him directly, saying, "Holding a title does not prove you are a scientist. A person who never publishes research is not a scientist."

While answering questions from Candaş Tolga Işık on tv100, Görür evaluated the earthquakes that have occurred in the Marmara region in recent days. Görür was asked about claims made by some earthquake experts that there is no such fault line in the Adalar region and that the information in question is for rent-seeking purposes.

Görür stated, "Holding a title does not prove you are a scientist. A scientist is a person who conducts research, collects data as a result of that research, analyzes and interprets that data in a laboratory, and presents and publishes it for the international public. A person who never publishes research is not a scientist."

Stating that saying there will be no earthquake in Istanbul means taking on a great burden of responsibility, Görür noted that such irresponsible statements not based on data pose a risk to the safety of millions of people. He added, "To give such irresponsible statements without being based on information means taking on the sin of thousands of people who will die when the earthquake happens tomorrow."
