The government announced it like good news, but... a 48,000 lira trip for a family of 4
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that with the "Island Cyprus Project" implemented by THY and AJet, the one-way ceiling price for flights to the TRNC will be 6,000 lira. The announcement drew backlash from citizens struggling with economic difficulties. The round-trip cost for a family of 4 reaches 48,000 lira.
While the economic crisis in Turkey continues, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced a new aviation practice for the TRNC. Within the scope of the "Island Cyprus Project" launched in partnership with Turkish Airlines and AJet, two flights will be organized every day on the Istanbul-TRNC route.
CEILING PRICE IS 6,000 LIRA
Minister Uraloğlu responded to written parliamentary questions from deputies regarding high ticket prices. In his statement, he announced the pricing policy determined within the scope of the project with the following words:
“Within the framework of the Island Cyprus Project, an accessible pricing policy will be followed for the two flights to be organized every day between Istanbul and the TRNC. With the 6,000 lira one-way ceiling price tariff on these two flights, we will not only facilitate transportation but also make the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus a center of attraction for domestic and foreign tourists.”
A DREAM FOR MINIMUM WAGE EARNERS
The minimum wage for 2025 has been fixed at 22,000 lira. Based on the 6,000 lira ticket price announced by Minister Uraloğlu, a family of 4 wishing to travel from Istanbul to the TRNC and return on the same day would have to pay 48,000 lira.
This figure corresponds to a cost of more than double the minimum wage.
