Government circles are talking about this: If the US plays the Kurdish card in Iran, what will be the impact on the Imralı process?
As the possibility of the US and Israel playing the Kurdish card in conjunction with their operations against Iran is being debated, significant assessments on the matter have emerged from government circles. In the commentary regarding how the Imralı process and Kurdish movements in the region might be affected, the influence of Iran's social structure and past experiences has come to the forefront.
Following the military attack launched by the US and Israel against Iran, the possibility of the US cooperating with the Kurdish people in Iran, as it has in Syria and Iraq, has become a subject of debate. However, views are emerging within government circles that implementing such a plan will not be easy. How a potential Kurdish movement might affect the Imralı process has also become a matter of curiosity.
EFFORTS TO OPEN A NEW FRONT IN IRAN THROUGH KURDS
According to information shared by Nefes columnist Nuray Babacan, following US President Donald Trump's phone call with Kurdish leaders in Iran, allegations have surfaced that efforts are being made to organize Iranian dissidents through the Kurds. It has been suggested that following these contacts by Trump, there are efforts to open a new front in Iran.
It is noted that the possibility of the US, which recently preferred the central government over the Kurds in Syria, using the "Kurdish card" again in Iran is low. According to government strategists, the US's past experiences with the Kurds and the differences in the region's social structure could lead to such initiatives remaining fruitless.
It is emphasized that Kurds in Iran possess broader opportunities in terms of cultural and legal rights compared to other Kurdish communities in the region. Furthermore, it is stated that Kurds in Iran, alongside Sunni and Azeri Turks, also share Shiite beliefs. This stands out as a factor that makes it difficult for Kurds and other groups to act together. For this reason, it is stated that efforts by the US and Israel to open a new channel in the region through the Kurds will not easily yield results.
THE US'S PAST STRATEGY TOWARD IRAQI KURDS
The past experiences of Iraqi Kurds with the US serve as a reminder of the heavy losses suffered during the period when the US abandoned the Kurds and reached an agreement with the Saddam Hussein administration. Therefore, it is assessed that the Barzani administration's involvement in US and Israeli plans is unlikely. However, while it is stated that Talabani and his team are aligned closely with the US, it is emphasized that their regional power is limited.
THE US CHOOSING THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT IN SYRIA
The US's policies in Syria are also being included in these discussions. It is stated that the US has taken the side of the central government by forcing the SDF and Mazloum Abdi into an agreement, and that it will be difficult for the US to find broad support from Kurdish groups in the region after this stage.
IMPACT ON THE IMRALI PROCESS
How the Imralı process will be affected by these developments is also being debated. According to political circles, while it is assessed that the process will not be significantly affected, the view is expressed that the efforts of the government and the state, along with the active role of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in the process, could yield positive results. However, according to Babacan, it is emphasized that it is still too early to see the final outcome of this process.
It is stated that organized structures are influential in the Kurdish people's relations with the US, and that these structures are occasionally used by the US and Israel. It is noted that the PKK and similar organizations are seen as "useful" by regional countries and that these organizations use various methods to influence the Kurdish people.
