Move from Greece likely to spark tension in the Aegean: Ports on 17 islands to be expanded and enlarged

As part of the strategic planning of the Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy aimed at safe access to islands, improvement of port infrastructure, and strengthening of regional and social cohesion, it has been stated that a project to enlarge 17 ports with a total budget of 110 million euros will be implemented.

According to a report by Yaşar Anter from the Sözcü newspaper, it was announced that critical interventions in more than 30 ports—ranging from Kastellorizo (Meis), located 2 kilometers from the Kaş district of Antalya, and Gavdos (Gavda) to Samothrace (Semadirek), including islands where arming and settlement are not permitted under the Treaty of Lausanne—are being financed with a budget of over 180 million euros by the ESPA Program 'Transport 2021-2027'.

It was stated that the goal of the project is to improve the safety and connectivity of island regions (especially the more remote ones) and to enhance communication between the centers of these regions and metropolitan centers on the mainland.
