He had tied his wife by her neck and feet and beaten her: 'I lit a cigarette and watched her suffer'

Teams from the Muğla Köyceğiz District Gendarmerie Command took action following a notification received via the Women's Support Application (KADES) from the Toparlar neighborhood. Upon arriving at the scene, the teams found M.B. in the living room, tied by her neck and feet with a rope and beaten.

Başkan, who was taken to the hospital and discharged after treatment, filed a complaint against her husband. Upon the instructions of the Muğla Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, Soner Başkan was taken into custody. After his procedures at the gendarmerie, Başkan was referred to the courthouse and arrested on charges of 'deprivation of liberty,' 'threat,' and 'intentional injury.'

Furthermore, the prosecutor's office statement of the suspect Soner Başkan has emerged. In his statement, Başkan claimed that he saw his wife, Melek Başkan, hiding his medication while he was at home, saying, "I asked her to give me my medication; she insulted me by calling me a 'Gypsy' and resisted giving me my medication. I got angry at this."

The remainder of Başkan's statement is as follows:

"I slapped Melek in the face 3 times. I sat her on the sofa in the living room on the lower floor of the house, combined the rope and cables I found, and tied her by her neck and feet. To prevent her from escaping, I tied one part of the ropes to the safe and the other part to the stairs leading to the upper floor. Her calling me a 'Gypsy' had made me very angry. After tying her up, I sat across from her, lit a cigarette, and watched her suffer. She asked for food and water; I did not give her any. She asked for a cigarette; I did not give her one either, and I watched her by throwing the butt of the cigarette I was smoking in front of her."

Stating that he left the house half an hour after tying his wife up, Başkan said, "When I returned, gendarmerie personnel had arrived in front of my house. While I was on the balcony, she had requested help from law enforcement using the application on her phone. I am not regretful for the actions I have taken. I did not make any threats to Melek such as 'I will kill you.' I accept the charges of 'deprivation of liberty' and 'injury' brought against me. The incident occurred because my wife Melek overwhelmed and angered me a lot. For this reason, I am not regretful."
