He was lynched for not intervening against a man beating his wife: 'I am 60 percent disabled, I cannot get up even if he hit my own daughter'

Footage of a man repeatedly hitting and assaulting his wife with an iron rod in the middle of the street in Manisa had become a trending topic on social media. Following the rapid spread of the footage, the suspect who assaulted his wife in the middle of the street was arrested.

However, the fact that no one intervened while the abusive husband was beating his wife in the video, and that one person was watching the moments while sitting down, sparked a major backlash on social media.

LEARNED TO BE 60 PERCENT DISABLED

It has emerged that the citizen who was lynched for not intervening in the incident is disabled. It was learned that Erkan Çiftçi, who was lynched on social media and subjected to abusive comments, is 60 percent disabled due to a spinal condition and suffers from ankylosing spondylitis. Stating that he was disturbed by the comments made about him on social media, Çiftçi recounted what happened.

Çiftçi said the following:

“I have a joint rheumatism condition. It also affects the spinal cord. Our movements are very limited. I have been suffering from this condition since I was 14. I have been suffering from this for 34 years. We have been staying here for a month. My chair is also different here. I need to sit upright.

'I CANNOT GET UP EVEN IF HE HIT MY OWN DAUGHTER'

On the day of the incident, I was sitting here looking towards the road across. While I was looking at the road, the man and the woman were together across the way. The woman started screaming there. As she was coming towards this side, she was making constant movements. When the man started running towards her, she said, 'Brother, help.' She ran towards me. I looked and saw the woman on the ground and the man constantly punching her. We cannot get up. People do not know what kind of condition we are in. They do not make evaluations accordingly. They are lynching me too much. One should ask why he is not getting up. We all have mothers. I have a 21-year-old daughter; even if he hit her, I could not get up. I have a risk of becoming paralyzed.”
