How was the CHP's İmralı decision received in the East? Provincial chairs reported to Özgür Özel

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel hosted provincial chairs and opinion leaders from the party's eastern provinces at the headquarters. During the meeting, the work of the commission established in Parliament as part of the new resolution process was discussed. According to a report by Cumhuriyet, CHP members serving on the commission gave a comprehensive presentation on the ongoing work and the joint report planned to be prepared.

Subsequently, the provincial chairs and opinion leaders took the floor to convey how the process is perceived in their respective regions and how the CHP's policy is resonating with the public. Participants stated that the CHP's stance in favor of peace in Syria and its emphasis on development for the East and Southeast have received a positive response on the ground. It was also noted that the party's approach to ensuring that past traumas are not repeated is considered important by the public.

COMMISSION AND İMRALI DEBATE ON THE TABLE

One of the key topics of the meeting was the regional reflection of the CHP's decision to participate in the parliamentary commission and not to visit İmralı. Assessing the issue, the provincial chairs stated, “Different evaluations are being made province by province regarding our stance. Each province interprets our position according to its own dynamics. Our presence in the commission is generally considered correct. Similarly, our base in many places says that the decision not to go to İmralı is correct. In some provinces, there is an expectation for the CHP to be bolder in the process. But overall, the base is satisfied with the CHP's stance in the process.”

It was reported that Özgür Özel, speaking at the end of the meeting, drew attention to the importance of the CHP's participation in the commission, stating, “Our presence in the commission is correct. Peace must be pursued in tandem with democracy.” It was learned that Özel reiterated the decision not to visit İmralı, saying, “There was no need to go to İmralı. If desired, views could have been conveyed to the commission in many different ways. The state was already conducting talks. We had also made suggestions for them to be heard in different ways, but these were not considered.”

LEGAL STEPS AND EMPHASIS ON DEMOCRACY

The legal dimension of the process was also addressed at the meeting. On this topic, Özel reportedly said, “While legal regulations are being made on one side, there should not be imprisoned mayors from the 'City Consensus' on the other, nor should Demirtaş remain in prison. This work must be inclusive. A principled process must be carried out. Work that truly serves democracy in the country must be done.”

In his assessment of the general framework of the process, Özel pointed out that Turkey solving its internal problems is also critical for regional peace, noting, “A Turkey that solves its own internal problems will also lead the way in bringing peace and prosperity to the region. We have an independent policy on every issue regarding Turkey's problems and the solutions it needs. Those who do not have their own policy become extras in someone else's plan. We will continue to support the end of terrorism, the silencing of weapons, and our determination and confidence-building steps regarding the resolution of the Kurdish issue on a democratic basis.”
