Hüseyin Özbek criticizes the People's Alliance's Abdullah Öcalan policies

12Punto columnist and lawyer Hüseyin Özbek reacted to the process initiated and maintained by the People's Alliance regarding the release of Abdullah Öcalan in a post on the social media platform X.

Özbek used the following expressions in his post:

“In the old Turkey, the capture of the separatist terrorist organization leader won elections. In the new Turkey, they are hoping for salvation from him being released from İmralı and gracing the Veteran Parliament with his presence! Would you look at the state to which the Republic of Turkey, founded with blood and wisdom, has been reduced?”

CRITICISMS CAME AFTER BAHÇELİ'S CALL

These criticisms came following the statements made by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli on October 22, 2024. Bahçeli had called on PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan to apply for the “right to hope” on the condition that he dissolve the organization and to speak at the DEM Party Group Meeting in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).

This call by Bahçeli also brought about discussions of a new resolution process in Turkey. The MHP leader's statements led to different reactions among political parties and the public.

Developments following this move by Bahçeli have been interpreted as a potential new strategy by the People's Alliance toward Kurdish voters. Many believe that the People's Alliance is making plans for constitutional amendments and early elections.

The People's Alliance has long been criticized for associating the opposition with terrorist organizations. However, in the recent period, it has drawn attention with steps associated with the HDP and its components. The discussions regarding terrorist organization leader Abdullah Öcalan, who is imprisoned in İmralı, and the warm contacts established with the HDP have become a subject of debate, especially among nationalist voters.
