'Ice' in water bottle considered a weapon
A woman who became angry when a stranger on the Metrobus looked at her bag attacked the woman with a frozen water bottle. The attacker, who was found to have committed the crime of using narcotics, was released on the condition of receiving alcohol and drug treatment. The Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office considered the frozen bottle a weapon and sentenced the attacker to 9 months in prison. The defendant's sentence was suspended.
Last October, university student Damla K. (22), who boarded the Metrobus to go to her home in Beylikdüzü, Istanbul, noticed that a woman she did not know was looking at her intently. After a while, the woman, with whom she made eye contact, hit Damla K. on the head with the frozen water bottle she was holding.
SHE SPLIT HER EYEBROW WITH FROZEN WATER
According to the report by Sabah, Damla K., whose eyebrow burst and was covered in blood from the blow, asked, "Sister, why did you do this to me?" and received the response, "Are you looking at my bag? Were you going to steal it?"
The Metrobus driver prevented the woman, who wanted to escape at the 15 July Martyrs Bridge stop, by closing the doors. Upon notification, police arrived at the scene and took the attacker, Tuğba G. (28), into custody. The victim was taken to the hospital.
RELEASED ON CONDITION OF ALCOHOL AND DRUG TREATMENT
Giving her statement, Damla K. said, "I was not looking at her bag. I do not know her, and I do not know why she did such a thing," and filed a complaint. Meanwhile, the suspect, Tuğba G., claimed that she was carrying water filled with ice due to a discomfort in her arm, that she got angry because she thought her bag was going to be stolen, and that the water hit the victim when she raised her arm.
The suspect, whose criminal record showed she had committed the crime of "using narcotics," was released under judicial control on the condition that she be subject to treatment and examination measures, including hospitalization, to overcome her addiction to narcotics and alcohol.
FROZEN BOTTLE CONSIDERED A WEAPON, RECEIVED 9-MONTH SENTENCE
The Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office stated that the young woman had a 1-centimeter cut on her eyebrow and that the water bottle, which was in the form of ice, was considered a weapon, requesting up to 1 year and 6 months in prison for Tuğba G. for the crime of "simple assault." The court pointed out that the victim was injured by the water bottle, which was considered a weapon in its frozen state, and sentenced the defendant to 6 months in prison for "simple assault against a woman," subsequently increasing it to 9 months in prison, noting that the act was committed with a weapon. The defendant's sentence was suspended.
