Ilber Ortayli delivers a striking political message through his book: 'It is not a corridor where one strolls with ambition'
The renowned historian, author, and academic Ilber Ortayli shared an excerpt from his book on his social media account, using it to convey a political message.
Ortayli shared the following excerpt from his book, 'How Does a Person Build Their Future?': "Politics is not a corridor where everyone strolls with ambition; some get stuck in that corridor. What I mean is that it is a fact that even inherited opportunities can constrain people. Therefore, I suppose the best path is for a person to progress by doing their own work."
In his social media post, Ilber Ortayli stated, "Very, very few people have the opportunity to live their lives for free, with little effort. It is not even certain whether those who possess that opportunity should be considered lucky.
The fortunate ones, the unfortunate ones... If all the fortunate ones were children of a sultan, just think about how many of them actually got their turn at the throne, and what fate befell those who did not.
It was like that for us, and it was like that in the French monarchy as well."
Ilber Ortayli's social media post is as follows:
“'A person should not fear dying, but rather never beginning to live.'
Look, my dear friend, what we call life is a duration. Living, however, is how you use that duration. There are those among us who use these two words interchangeably; this is very wrong. It is not for nothing that there are two separate words here. How did you spend that duration, how did you behave, what was your style? That is your living. Now, you are given a duration. An artist can be tested on stage at most twice, right?
Let's say your morale wasn't good the first time and you couldn't pull it off; if a second opportunity is created, you have to use it well. Or, if you missed the road somewhere, you have to climb from somewhere else. Even if it is circuitous, one must reach the destination.
Very, very few people have the opportunity to live their lives for free, with little effort. It is not even certain whether those who possess that opportunity should be considered lucky. The fortunate ones, the unfortunate ones... If all the fortunate ones were children of a sultan, just think about how many of them actually got their turn at the throne, and what fate befell those who did not. It was like that for us, and it was like that in the French monarchy as well.
Politics is not a corridor where everyone strolls with ambition; some get stuck in that corridor. What I mean is that it is a fact that even inherited opportunities can constrain people. Therefore, I suppose the best path is for a person to progress by doing their own work.
