Ilber Ortayli makes a move for Fatih Altayli after weeks

Journalist Fatih Altayli, who has been detained since June 22 on charges of "threatening the President" and whose YouTube channel has been blocked, received a visit in Silivri Prison this time from Prof. Dr. Ilber Ortayli.

Ortayli announced the visit on his social media account. Ortayli said, "We miss our friend. We want to see him back on our screens."

Ortayli made the following statements:

"Today, I visited my friend and colleague Fatih Altayli in Silivri. The officials, especially our prosecutor, were extremely kind and helpful. I found Fatih to be in high spirits and strong.

Politicians in Silivri are being visited not only by those from their own parties, but also by figures from different political lines or those whose paths have diverged in the past. I find this picture promising. Setting aside old arguments and grievances to form a new political understanding oriented toward the future is a positive development for Turkey.

Fatih is following the agenda closely, reading books, and exercising. He even recommended some newly released books to me. We touched upon this in our conversation with Fatih; prison can provide lasting gains to a person when evaluated correctly. Throughout history, there have been those who learned languages or wrote literary works while in prison.

Trotsky learning German to the level of oratory or Prosper Mérimée mastering the grammar of Russian during his 20-day detention are striking examples in this sense. Of course, this is also related to a person's mental resilience. For those who can see prison not as a collapse but as a period of recovery, it can be a different kind of school. The Turkish society is also a free people who can make sense of this process with their own traditions."
