İlber Ortaylı: 'Syrians will form a party after a while'

Historian İlber Ortaylı made striking remarks on the program 'Cahille Sohbeti Kestim' (I Cut Off the Conversation with the Ignorant), broadcast on Kafa TV.

'THEY ARE NOT GOING TO LEAVE QUIETLY'

Emphasizing the birth rates of Syrian refugees in Turkey, Ortaylı made the following statements:

"The population of Syrians in Turkey is increasing significantly; they are having many children. Those who were going to have a limited number of children went to other countries. Syrians will get involved in parties in Turkey; these are not people who will just sit here quietly and leave.

Be sure of this, Syrians are not like other immigrants. After a while, they will form a party of their own in Turkey."

WHO IS İLBER ORTAYLI?

İlber Ortaylı was born on May 21, 1947, in Bregenz, Austria.

In 1970, he graduated from the Department of History at the Ankara University Faculty of Languages, History and Geography. He studied Slavic and Eastern European languages at the University of Vienna. He completed his master's degree at the University of Chicago under the supervision of Halil İnalcık.

Ortaylı, who received his doctorate in 1974 at the Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences with his thesis titled 'Local Administrations After the Tanzimat', became an associate professor in 1979 at the same faculty with his work titled 'German Influence in the Ottoman Empire'.

Ortaylı, who became a professor in 1989, is a historian, academic, and author. He is also an honorary member of the Turkish Historical Society.

In addition, Ortaylı is a member of the board of directors of the International Committee of Ottoman Studies and a member of the European Society for Iranian Studies and the Austrian-Turkish Science Forum.
