İmamoğlu: The impoverished middle class is what carried us to victory in the local elections

Fourteen metropolitan mayors from the Republican People's Party (CHP) met at a gathering hosted by Gökhan Zeybek, the CHP Deputy Chairman responsible for local governments, and Ekrem İmamoğlu, the President of the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye (TBB) and Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB).

Zeybek and İmamoğlu made statements to the media prior to the closed-door meeting held at the Istanbul Planning Agency (İPA) campus in Florya. 

Sharing summary information regarding the March 31, 2024 local elections, Zeybek said, "We are here today for a meeting with our metropolitan mayors, following our regular meetings with CHP mayors who fielded candidates in 1,151 out of 1,393 electoral districts and who govern cities that account for more than 65 percent of Türkiye's population and over 80 percent of the Turkish economy. Following the 2019 elections, CHP-run municipalities, led by our metropolitan mayors, governed 49 percent of Türkiye's population. Through their work and performance, we achieved the success of retaining 97 percent of the total population of the municipalities we were already governing in the March 31, 2024 elections. This demonstrates that the performance we have delivered over the last five years has been accepted by society and that our mayors have high credibility in implementing the solutions they promised to the public. That success, in turn, brought us the achievement of governing new municipalities as well."
