IMM announces snow depth in Istanbul

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) announced that following three days of precipitation across the city, snow depth was measured at 1-3 centimeters in the city center and between 5-15 centimeters in high and northern regions. Officials stated that the precipitation is expected to lose its effect starting today.

In the statement made by the IMM, it was expressed that the Siberian-origin cold air wave that took Istanbul under its influence, along with heavy snowfall, negatively affected life in the city.

According to the statement, as a result of the precipitation that lasted for three days, while the snow depth was measured at 1-3 centimeters in the city center, this figure reached 5-15 centimeters in high altitudes and northern regions. With the decrease in precipitation starting today, temperatures are projected to hover between 5-7 degrees in the coming days.

The IMM emphasized that different institutions have taken responsibility in combating winter conditions and that a total road network of 4 thousand 140 kilometers across Istanbul is being monitored by various units.

In the statement, which noted that 11 thousand 916 personnel and 3 thousand 375 vehicles and construction equipment were on duty across the city as part of snow-clearing efforts, it was reported that 1621 tons of salt and 35 tons of solution were used to keep the roads open. It was stated that salting operations are continuing uninterrupted at many points, primarily on main arteries, squares, metro entrances, and bus stops.
