IMM Deputy Mayor Aslan reacts to operation: You cannot undermine an institution serving millions in this way
Reacting to an operation conducted across 6 provinces centered in Istanbul, in which 57 people were detained, IMM Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan emphasized that dawn raids damage the institution's reputation and the public's sense of justice.
As part of an investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, simultaneous operations were carried out this morning targeting Boğaziçi Tesis Yönetim AŞ, a subsidiary of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM). In the raids covering the provinces of Istanbul, Adana, Bursa, Diyarbakır, Konya, and Yalova, 57 out of 58 suspects were detained. While the reason for the operation was cited as alleged irregularities in certain tenders, a harsh statement came from the IMM side.
REACTION TO THE METHOD AND TIMING OF THE OPERATION
Making a statement on his social media account, IMM Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan described the detention process, which also included municipal bureaucrats, as a "policy of attrition." Stating that "these systematically conducted dawn raids cast a shadow over both the sense of justice in society and the reputation of our institutions," Aslan noted that targeting an institution that serves millions of citizens in this manner is unacceptable.
EMPHASIS ON THE RULE OF LAW AND THE PRESUMPTION OF INNOCENCE
Continuing his statement by pointing out that justice must operate equally for everyone, Aslan reminded that the detained individuals were people with no flight risk who could have gone to give statements if summoned. Arguing that the method applied does not align with legal principles, Aslan concluded his reaction with the following words:
"Undoubtedly, no one is exempt from investigations. However, this treatment of people whose whereabouts are known does not align with the fundamental principles of law. We expect the principles of the rule of law, especially the presumption of innocence, to be applied for everyone."
