The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that a 4.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in Yalova's Çınarcık district at 23:53. The earthquake, which was also felt in Istanbul and surrounding provinces, caused brief panic.

Recent tremors in the Sea of Marmara have brought the potential Istanbul earthquake back to the agenda.

"THE SYSTEM IN THE MARMARA IS ACCUMULATING STRESS"

Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made a statement regarding the earthquake in Yalova on his social media account.

Stating that he believes the earthquake occurred on small normal faults south of the Adalar Fault, Prof. Dr. Görür said, "The system in the Marmara is accumulating stress."

Prof. Dr. Görür's statement is as follows:

"Friends, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Sea of Marmara, in the Çınarcık Basin. I suspect the earthquake may have occurred on small normal faults south of the Adalar Fault. This will be clarified by the fault solution. I am posting the fault map. The system in the Marmara is accumulating stress, with love."
