Important warning from Okan Tüysüz following the earthquake in Malatya
Evaluating the 5.0-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Battalgazi district of Malatya, geologist Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz stated that despite being felt strongly, the earthquake does not indicate an expectation of a larger event. Emphasizing that damaged buildings should not be entered, Tüysüz warned that aftershocks of similar magnitude could occur in the region.
According to data from the AFAD Earthquake Department, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Battalgazi district of Malatya at 06:20.
The earthquake, which was recorded at a depth of 15.59 kilometers, was also felt in surrounding provinces.
Following the earthquake, Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum and Malatya Governor Seddar Yavuz announced that there were no negative reports.
OKAN TÜYSÜZ: "AN EARTHQUAKE WE DO NOT EXPECT TO CAUSE DAMAGE"
Geologist Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz made evaluations regarding the earthquake during a live broadcast on NTV.
Reminding that a 5.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in the same region on May 20, Tüysüz stated, "It is an earthquake that was felt strongly, but it is seen as an earthquake that we do not expect to cause damage. Let me say that we are not in an expectation of a major earthquake."
HE ISSUED AN AFTERSHOCK WARNING
Stating that damaged buildings should not be entered, Tüysüz pointed out that aftershocks of similar magnitude could occur in the region.
Tüysüz said, "Aftershocks of similar magnitude may occur. If there is damage, aftershocks could increase it."
"SEISMIC ACTIVITY WILL CONTINUE"
Stating that there has been significant seismic activity across the Eastern Anatolia Region following the February 6 earthquakes, Tüysüz expressed that this activity will continue for some time.
Reminding that the February 6 earthquakes occurred on the East Anatolian Fault, Tüysüz said that stress transfer continues on neighboring faults.
Continuing his assessment, Tüysüz stated, "There are also faults capable of producing 6-6.5 magnitude earthquakes. Even these earthquakes show how powerful the February 6 earthquakes were. There will certainly not be long-duration earthquakes in the places where the February 6 earthquakes occurred. The stress on neighboring faults does not end; it is being transferred. Today's 5.0-magnitude earthquakes are not destructive earthquakes; they are earthquakes that are felt."
