Increased by 53 percent, youth at the top... One in every 120 people left the country

TÜİK has shared the 2023 International Migration Statistics.

Accordingly, the number of people who migrated to Turkey from abroad in 2023 decreased by 35.9% compared to the previous year, reaching 316 thousand 456 people. Men accounted for 54.2% of the migrating population, while women accounted for 45.8%. Of the population arriving from abroad, 101 thousand 677 were Turkish citizens, and 214 thousand 779 were foreign nationals.

ONE IN EVERY 120 PEOPLE MIGRATED

The number of people who migrated from Turkey to abroad in 2023 increased by 53% compared to the previous year, reaching 714 thousand 579. Men accounted for 55.2% of the migrating population, while women accounted for 44.8%. Of the population leaving Turkey for abroad, 291 thousand 377 were Turkish citizens, and 423 thousand 202 were foreign nationals. 

YOUTH ARE LEAVING THE COUNTRY

When the age groups of those who migrated to Turkey in 2023 are examined, it was observed that the highest number of migrants were in the 20-24 age group at 12.7%. This age group was followed by the 25-29 age group at 10.8% and the 15-19 age group at 10.3%. Looking at the age groups of the population that migrated from Turkey, it was observed that the highest number of migrants were in the 25-29 age group at 15%. This age group was followed by the 30-34 age group at 12.9% and the 20-24 age group at 12.5%.

ISTANBUL TOPS THE LIST IN MIGRATION

When the distribution of those who migrated to Turkey in 2023 by province is examined, it was seen that Istanbul was the province receiving the most migration at 29.2%. Istanbul was followed by Antalya at 9.5%, Ankara at 6.5%, Mersin at 4.9%, and Bursa at 4.4%. 

When looking at the distribution of the population that migrated from Turkey by province, it was seen that Istanbul was the province with the highest outward migration at 36.4%. Istanbul was followed by Antalya at 10%, Ankara at 7.1%, İzmir at 3.5%, and Bursa at 2.6%.

RUSSIANS TOP THE LIST IN INCOMING MIGRATION

Citizens of the Russian Federation accounted for 13.2% of the foreign population arriving in Turkey.

Among the foreign national population that arrived in Turkey in 2023, citizens of the Russian Federation took the first place with 13.2%. The Russian Federation was followed by citizens of Azerbaijan at 8.2%, Turkmenistan at 7.3%, Iran at 6.7%, and Afghanistan at 5.9%.

Among the foreign national population that migrated from Turkey, citizens of the Russian Federation took the first place with 17%. The Russian Federation was followed by citizens of Iraq at 15.7%, Afghanistan at 8.3%, Iran at 6.5%, and Turkmenistan at 4.9%.
