Indictment prepared in Atlas Çağlayan murder case

Indictment prepared in Atlas Çağlayan murder case

A new development has occurred in the investigation into the murder of 16-year-old Atlas Çağlayan, which took place in the Güngören district of Istanbul on January 14, 2026. The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has completed its investigation into the incident and prepared the indictment.

FORENSIC REPORT: "CAPABLE OF UNDERSTANDING LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY"

The Forensic Medicine Institute report included in the investigation file states that the child driven to crime, E.Ç., born on April 13, 2011, possessed sufficient ability to perceive the legal meaning and consequences of the act he committed and to direct his behavior.

According to autopsy findings, it was determined that Atlas Çağlayan was wounded in the chest with a sharp, piercing instrument and lost his life due to a cut to the aorta, internal organ damage, and internal bleeding.

THREATS TO MULTIPLE PEOPLE AT THE SCENE

Camera footage and witness statements included in the indictment revealed that the defendant, E.Ç., did not only attack Atlas Çağlayan. According to the report, E.Ç. also threatened other children named D.Ç., Y.O.O., R.O., and T.U.A. by brandishing a knife during the incident.

Furthermore, it was determined that the knife used in the incident was a prohibited weapon under Law No. 6136.

TRIAL PROCESS BEGINS IN THE HIGH CRIMINAL COURT

In accordance with the prepared indictment, a public lawsuit has been filed against the detained defendant E.Ç. for the crimes of intentional murder against a child, violation of Law No. 6136, and chain-offense armed threat.

The file has been sent to the high criminal court.
