Is the earthquake in Silivri a precursor to a possible Marmara earthquake? Important statements from Naci Görür and Ahmet Ercan

Prof. Dr. Naci Görür evaluated the earthquake that occurred in Silivri, stating, "Yes, this magnitude 3 earthquake is on the Kumburgaz Fault that we are concerned about, but small creep-type tremors occur occasionally at the western end of this fault." Ahmet Ercan said, "The 6 billion gigatons of destructive force have not yet accumulated."

Is the earthquake in Silivri a precursor to a possible Marmara earthquake? Important statements from Naci Görür and Ahmet Ercan

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that a magnitude 3 earthquake occurred off the coast of Silivri in the Sea of Marmara yesterday. While it was wondered whether this earthquake in Silivri was a precursor, statements came from expert names.

Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür shared his assessments regarding the earthquake on his social media account.

Pointing to the Kumburgaz Fault, Görür said, "Yes, this magnitude 3 earthquake is on the Kumburgaz Fault that we are concerned about, but small creep-type tremors occur occasionally at the western end of this fault."

Görür noted the following in his post:

"Many of my friends are asking for my opinion on the small earthquake that occurred in the Marmara. We always say that no one can easily say that this earthquake is a precursor. Yes, this magnitude 3 earthquake is on the Kumburgaz Fault that we are concerned about, but small creep-type tremors occur occasionally at the western end of this fault. This is likely one of them. I don't think there is anything to worry about. Small earthquakes linked to gas emissions are also common in the Western Marmara. With love. On this occasion, I would like to repeat once again: As a nation, we cannot stop earthquakes, but we can build earthquake-resistant residential areas; demand this from our administrators."

"THE 6 BILLION GIGATONS OF DESTRUCTIVE FORCE HAVE NOT YET ACCUMULATED"

Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan commented on the earthquake on his social media account, saying, "The M3.3 micro-earthquake that occurred off the coast of Silivri in the North Marmara at 19.36 today is not a precursor to the expected earthquake. The Marmara crust is not under tension; the 6 billion gigatons of destructive force have not yet accumulated. Period."
