Istanbul University rector's 'marriage and children' advice to graduates: Sparks backlash on social media

During the graduation ceremony held at Istanbul University, Rector Prof. Dr. Osman Bülent Zülfikar drew attention with his advice to young people regarding "marriage" and "having children." In his speech, Zülfikar stated, "I would have liked to see how many of our students graduating here today I could see with their babies. I would have liked to see them with their little ones. I would have liked to see them come holding their hands. Because your age is the most suitable time, the most productive time. One must never forget these things. But of course, we have reached such an understanding that we are always postponing them."

The rector's remarks quickly became a trending topic on social media. Many users emphasized that university graduation ceremonies are moments to celebrate individual achievements and expressed that they did not look favorably upon the call to start a family. Some users, however, shared messages supporting the rector's views.

PROTEST AT GRADUATION

Protests against Rector Zülfikar took place at the Istanbul University Faculty of Dentistry graduation ceremony held the previous day. As Zülfikar continued his speech, some students turned their backs to the stage. The students' families also supported them with applause.
