It has been revealed how much debt Erdoğan left the IMM with: Ali Müfit Gürtuna explains

Targeting CHP-run municipalities in his latest statement, Erdoğan had announced, "Our ministry will begin collecting these debts."

It has emerged that Erdoğan, who is effectively trying to squeeze the municipalities he lost in the elections with this move, left the IMM with 1.5 billion dollars in debt during his time managing it.

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, whose party fell to second place in the local elections and lost many municipalities across Turkey to the CHP, frequently targets opposition municipalities.

In his latest statement at his party's group meeting, Erdoğan said, "Let your municipalities pay their accumulated debts to the Social Security Institution.

Currently, our Ministry of Treasury and Finance will begin collecting these debts at the source regarding the municipalities' debts. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

There is no permission to spend the nation's assets in various places. The Ministry of Treasury and Finance will now collect these at the source."

ALİ MÜFİT GÜRTUNA DISCLOSED ERDOĞAN'S DEBT

According to a report by Tele1, Ali Müfit Gürtuna, who took over the IMM from Erdoğan in 1998, explained how much debt he inherited when he took over the municipality. Gürtuna stated that he took over the IMM with 1.5 billion dollars in debt.

Gürtuna used the following expressions:

“I took over the IMM with 1.5 billion dollars in debt. I handed it over with zero debt. But unfortunately, excessive borrowing started again after us. These municipalities should not be able to borrow more than a certain percentage of their budget.

Those who secure a majority in the municipal council borrow in an incredible way.

They hand over municipalities to their successors with massive debts. And those who come in next become unable to work.”
