Joe Biden announces support for Harris: Who is Kamala Harris?

US President Joe Biden, who was the Democratic Party's candidate for the November elections in the US and whose health status has recently been a subject of debate regarding whether it would allow him to continue his presidency, has announced his withdrawal from the race.

In the letter he released, Biden stated, "It is in the best interest of my party and the country."

After withdrawing from the election race, Biden announced that he endorses and supports Vice President Kamala Harris as the candidate.

US President Joe Biden, whose candidacy from the Democratic Party became a subject of debate following his poor performance in the debate he entered in June with the Republican Party's presidential candidate Donald Trump, announced his withdrawal from the candidacy in a letter he published today.

Making a move that upended the election agenda 4 months before the election, President Biden said in the letter he published that serving as President has been the greatest honor of his life.

Biden used the following expressions in the letter:

“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

President Biden thanked Vice President Kamala Harris, calling her an “extraordinary partner.”

Biden stated, “I will speak to the Nation in more detail about my decision later this week.”

“Let me express my deepest gratitude to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me,” said Biden, continuing in his letter:

“I believe today what I have always believed: that there is nothing America can't do – when we do it together. We just need to remember we are the United States of America.”

Biden had contracted COVID-19 last week, but in a statement he made on Friday, he said he was looking forward to “getting back on the campaign trail next week.”

HE ENDORSED KAMALA HARRIS'S CANDIDACY

Biden wrote that he endorses and supports the candidacy of US Vice President Kamala Harris.

After the publication of his letter, Biden posted a message on the subject on his X account.

He used the following expressions in the message:

"My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats, it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this"

WHO IS KAMALA HARRIS?

Harris, one of two daughters of a scientist mother of Indian descent who worked on breast cancer and was the daughter of a diplomat, and a Jamaican-born father who was an economics professor at Stanford University, was born and raised in Oakland, California, in the US.

She received her undergraduate degree in political science and economics from Howard University in the capital, Washington, which is historically known as a “black college.” Immediately after completing her law degree at Hastings College of Law near San Francisco, she began working as a prosecutor in Alameda County, where crime rates were high in the state.

Harris became the San Francisco district attorney in 2003. She holds the distinction of being the first black and Asian-origin woman to hold this position.

In October 2018, following the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Arabian Consulate General in Istanbul, Harris accused Trump of “turning a blind eye” to this murder.

At that time, Harris called for the US to “fundamentally review” its relations with Saudi Arabia.

Born in California as the child of immigrant parents of Jamaican and Indian descent, Kamala Harris is also known for her sensitivity to civil rights and her identity as a jurist.

FIRST INDIAN-ORIGIN PROFESSOR

In 2010, she broke new ground again by becoming the first female attorney general of the state of California. In the US system, this office also means the ministry of justice. Here, for the first time, she launched the “Back on Track” program, which allows people involved in drug crimes to graduate from high school or find jobs instead of going to prison; she carried out programs in the fields of fighting racism and ensuring criminal procedural justice. All these successes and firsts in her career paved the way for Harris to become the second black female senator and the first senator of Indian descent in the US in 2017. In her senatorial role, to which she was elected from California, she served on committees responsible for homeland security investigations, government affairs, intelligence, budget, and justice. During her time in the Senate, Harris also made a name for herself with the “tough questions” she directed at Judge Brett Kavanaugh, whom Donald Trump nominated for Supreme Court membership, during the investigation conducted in the Senate regarding sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh.
