Joint statement from Selahattin Demirtaş and Selçuk Mızraklı: 'Just as our entry into prison was political...'

A delegation consisting of the DEM Party, TİP, CHP, EMEP, EHP, TÖP, ESP, DBP, the Revolutionary Party, SODAP, SYKP, SMF, and the Green Left Party visited former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş and Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Selçuk Mızraklı, who are held in Edirne Prison.

Following the visit, Demirtaş and Mızraklı issued a joint statement.

"JUST AS OUR ENTRY INTO PRISON WAS POLITICAL, SO TOO WILL BE OUR EXIT"

Stating that they have no expectations regarding their release from prison, Demirtaş and Mızraklı said, "Just as our entry into prison was political, so too will be our exit."

The joint statement included the words, "We will continue to do our best to strengthen democratic politics, wherever we may be. Turkey is now pregnant with major changes."

The full statement is as follows:

"First of all, we send our sincere greetings and love to all our people, especially all the friends who came to the gates of Edirne Prison in solidarity. We are doing very well and our morale is high. We are following developments closely and making every effort we can. Everyone should know that we are not counting the days to get out. Just as our entry into prison was political, so too will be our exit. Our greatest priority and sensitivity was to stop the loss of life caused by conflicts. For now, we are happy to have achieved this. We hope that this environment will be made permanent through the laws to be enacted. However, the real struggle for democracy will develop and grow from here on out. We will continue to do our best to strengthen democratic politics, wherever we may be. Turkey is now pregnant with major changes. For this change to be in favor of our peoples and the working class, there is a need for much stronger and more fundamental alliances of struggle. Your gathering in front of Edirne Prison today has shown that this alliance of struggle continues to grow under all circumstances. For this reason, we would like to thank all the parties individually and send them our sincere greetings and love. Hoping to meet in free tomorrows."
