The Republican People's Party (CHP) held its general chairmanship election on the first day of its 38th Ordinary Congress. In the congress where 1,367 delegates cast their votes, the candidate of the change movement, Özgür Özel, won the election by receiving 812 votes. Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu received 536 votes.

With these results, Özgür Özel became the 8th Chairman of the CHP.

Following Özel's victory, the remarks made by former CHP deputy and journalist Barış Yarkadaş last September regarding Özgür Özel have become a hot topic again.
