Journalist Seyhan Avşar: 'Police are at my door'

An investigation was launched against Avşar following her report that associates of drug baron Urfi Çetinkaya had contacted Deputy Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek to secure his release.

Access to the report by journalist Seyhan Avşar, which detailed that drug baron Urfi Çetinkaya's associates had contacted Deputy Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek to attempt to secure his release, had been blocked by the Istanbul 7th Criminal Court of Peace.

'THE ORDER CAME FROM THE DEPUTY MINISTER OF JUSTICE'

In another post made shortly after this one, Avşar described what she experienced:

"I learned from my mother that there were police officers in front of the building and at my door just as I was about to arrive home. My mother, who had gone out to the balcony, said, 'Don't come home, my daughter.' I entered the building saying, 'There is no situation for me to run from.'

The police said, 'We apologize for coming at this hour, but we needed to summon you for a statement urgently. The order is to that effect.' They did not detain me. But they tried to intimidate me.

Who gave the order? Deputy Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek. I will go with my lawyer and give my statement."

INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED

In a statement she made on her social media account today, Avşar announced that an investigation had been launched against her following her report regarding Deputy Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek. Avşar wrote the following:

"An investigation has been launched against me following my report yesterday regarding Deputy Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek.

I learned that Gürlek's lawyer went to the Istanbul Courthouse in person and pressured them to have me detained.

The person I reported on is a deputy minister, and he is the superior of the people who were given the order to detain me. I do not have the power to resist this detention. I do not know if the prosecutors who were given the order can resist either. However, history records both those who resist and those who submit. The public will decide..."

"I WILL GIVE MY STATEMENT ON MONDAY"

Journalist Seyhan Avşar provided information about the latest situation in a post on her social media account. Avşar wrote:

"I am a journalist. I have always stood behind the news I write.

Something that should not happen is happening with personalized law. Police are sent to the door of a female journalist who has a 2-year-old child on a Friday evening saying, 'come to give a statement urgently.'

I spoke with my lawyer. I am a journalist who always goes to the courthouse whenever summoned. I will do the same again. First thing Monday morning, we will go to give a statement.

I will defend both the law and journalism. This is the greatest legacy I will leave to my child in my arms."
