Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç: We view Özgür Özel's remarks about us as insolence
Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç evaluated the statements and street protest calls made by CHP Chairman Özgür Özel. Tunç stated that the judiciary is independent. The Justice Minister spoke to members of the press.
Tunç evaluated the developments on the agenda and made the following statements:
The investigation conducted by the Terror Crimes Investigation Bureau was initiated against 7 people. An investigation was launched for the crime of aiding terrorism. There are 3 fugitives, and the process to apprehend them is ongoing. Detention warrants had been issued for 100 people for crimes such as bribery and obtaining personal data. Proceedings were initiated against 106 people. In that file, 16 people are currently fugitives. Once they are apprehended, they will be brought to the courthouse.
There are 90 people in police custody; they will be brought to the courthouse once their procedures are completed.
Since these are organized crimes and terror-related offenses, there is a maximum period of 4 days. Mr. Özel using such expressions and the path the CHP has followed since the investigation began is not the right path.
We especially do not accept the remark he used regarding us, saying 'they are acting like a criminal organization'; we absolutely reject these expressions. The path they are taking is not right; it will also harm them...
The investigation process is currently ongoing; do you know what the people in custody are saying? Do you have information about the evidence collected? No! But using expressions that will influence the process is incompatible with a state of law...
When the indictment for that file is prepared, it will be known to the public along with all its evidence; what are you trying to achieve by jumping to conclusions? Will you be ashamed and resign when everything is revealed?
There is the principle of confidentiality of the investigation, which is a rule mandated by the Constitution and universal law. Here, you are rejecting the investigation in its entirety. We see television broadcasts about what is inside this file... These are matters that affect the confidentiality of the investigation; our prosecutors here are individuals serving on behalf of the public, and they have launched the investigation in light of the findings they have obtained.
They will also present their defenses, and if this turns into an indictment, the entire public will see it.
Özgür Özel's call for street protests is wrong; he needs to act more responsibly... What would our Interior Minister have said if you brought the people you called to the streets face-to-face with the police and the police were injured!
As the Justice Minister, am I saying they are criminals? I am saying an investigation has been opened. Won't you regret it when the file is opened and the entire public sees the information collected?
Do not disrupt the peace of the nation by stirring up the streets...
I view the expression 'they are governing the country like a criminal organization' as insolence; he should know his place... We are carrying out our duties within a system. If you use such expressions, you are being insolent. But unfortunately, these people lack that sense of responsibility.
When the files are opened, the public will see what is for and against; you cannot get anywhere by making threats right now. We will wait for the prosecutors' decision in the ongoing investigation. Then the matter will come before the judges...
The peace criminal judges will reach a decision, and that decision will be subject to review... If you are trying to overshadow the matter by inciting our students within this mechanism, don't even bother; you cannot overshadow it. The judiciary makes decisions and performs its duties on behalf of the nation; it is not influenced by the streets. Whoever is involved in terrorism, whoever is involved in corruption, the judiciary will hold them accountable.
We invite CHP Chairman Özel to act responsibly. We find his words directed at our President to be wrong; we evaluate his attempt to associate this investigation with our President as irresponsibility.
The judiciary does not take orders from anyone or any authority. Therefore, we will all wait patiently for the outcome of the investigation together.
