Kılıçdaroğlu's 'Six Arrows' remark ahead of the party statute congress: 'In the newly prepared party program...'

The 7th Chairman of the CHP, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, made evaluations regarding the statute congress to be held in September.

Speaking to Sözcü columnist Saygı Öztürk, he pointed out that the most frequent proposal during his own tenure was the "term limit rule."

Kılıçdaroğlu expressed his views on how candidates for parliament and mayoral positions should be determined:

“There are numerous studies conducted on the statute in the party's archives. We had also brought the work we did regarding the statute to a certain point. In addition to the work carried out by our party's election and legal affairs departments at that time, proposals for amendments had also been received. The most frequently proposed one was the ‘term limit rule.’ There are also demands for primary elections. Party membership should be divided into ‘active’ and ‘passive’ membership. This also has rules. Active members who fulfill the requirements of membership should participate in the primary election. We had introduced a statute amendment regarding the selection of parliamentary, mayoral, provincial general assembly, and municipal council candidates by active members. But the congress rejected it. Now, as I understand it, there are proposals from delegates on the same subject to the congress. I am pleased that a consensus has emerged to ensure this proposal is accepted. Having a primary election, in a sense, provides a sense of belonging between the member and the party. Regular payment of dues and participation in party activities bring added value to the party. Candidates will not be determined by central appointment, but by the votes of active delegates through primary elections.

There are proposals to introduce a ‘term limit rule’ for parliamentary and mayoral positions. There are those who want parliamentary service to be limited to two or three terms. These proposals will most likely be discussed in the party's authorized bodies and then addressed at the Statute Congress.”

Stating that work on the party program to be carried out after the statute congress is necessary, Kılıçdaroğlu noted the following:

“There are also studies conducted regarding the party program. They are also in the party's archives. The party program also needs to be renewed. The party program needs to be reconsidered according to changing and developing conditions. Before the CHP's program, we must act from the principle we call ‘Democratization,’ that is, ‘crowning the Republic with democracy.’ Today, what we call ‘democracy’ has remained entirely in name only. The Constitution is not being implemented, laws are not being implemented. Therefore, we need to set rules in the party program that prioritize democracy, explain what democracy is, and determine what moves the CHP should make in this regard. Work will be done on this for the party program. The CHP's perspective on international relations, such as the Socialist International or the European Union, and other international connections must also be reflected in the party program in some way. The policies to be followed in a multi-dimensional economy and its basic principles should be included in the party program.”

Kılıçdaroğlu added, “A new interpretation, a contemporary interpretation regarding the Six Arrows, also needs to be included in the party program to be prepared.”

THE SIX ARROWS DEBATE IN THE CHP

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel had stated in an interview on July 5, 2024, that they were considering adding two colors to the Statism arrow in the CHP logo.

In his statement, Özel said, “We are thinking of adding two colors to the CHP's statism arrow. Green, representing sustainable development and environmental sensitivity while governing the state, and a purple color representing gender equality. We are filling in the substance of the change.”

At the CHP Women's Branches Congress on August 4, 2024, Özel announced that they would paint half of the arrow representing statism in the party logo green and the other half purple.

This statement by Özel had caused some reactions.

Following the reactions, CHP Spokesperson Deniz Yücel made a statement and announced that there would be no color change in the party logo.
