Kurtulmuş had given the green light: AKP objects to Bahçeli's 'commission' call

MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, the architect of the new reconciliation process, had proposed the establishment of a National Unity and Solidarity Commission in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) and stated that the Speaker of the Parliament should chair the commission in question.

While DEM Party member Pervin Buldan supported Bahçeli's statement, Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş had given the green light.

A surprise veto to this call from Bahçeli came from the AKP.

"THERE IS NO POSSIBILITY OF DISCUSSING THE PROCESS"

AKP Deputy Chairman Zafer Sarıkaya, in his statement to NTV, outlined his party's views regarding MHP leader Bahçeli's commission call as follows:

"When we look at the last 40 years, Turkey has paid a very heavy price regarding terrorism. We are talking about a process in which we have lost more than 40 thousand people as martyrs, and when we look at it economically, we are talking about a cost expressed between 1 and 2 trillion dollars. Therefore, I find it extremely valuable and precious that the PKK terrorist organization has, as of today, expressed the process of laying down arms, following the call made from İmralı and the process that began with the will of our President. However, I would also like to state that merely laying down arms is not enough; the weapons must be surrendered.

I am of the opinion that there is no possibility of discussing the process in the TBMM in an environment where weapons are still creating an agenda.

Therefore, I believe that it is of course valuable and precious for a process to begin where all political parties can perhaps contribute, starting from the period when all ties to these weapons have been severed."

"I DO NOT BELIEVE IT IS RIGHT TO MOVE TO THE NEXT STAGE"

Stating that his party is of the opinion that weapons must first be surrendered, Sarıkaya continued:

"Processes need to progress in stages. If you evolve a process at a certain stage to the next stage without completing the necessary actions at that stage, I do not believe it is very correct to move on to the next stage.

I am of the opinion that weapons must be laid down and surrendered, and that it must be clearly communicated to the relevant institutions by the MIT that there is no longer any threat element from Turkey."
