Lightning tragedy in schoolyard: 2 children lose their lives
In the Ergani district of Diyarbakır, two children waiting in the shade of a tree in a primary schoolyard lost their lives after the tree was struck by lightning this morning, while another child was seriously injured.
In a tragic incident that occurred this morning in the Çiçeközü hamlet of Olgun village, located in the Ergani district of Diyarbakır, lightning struck a tree in the yard of a local primary school. 13-year-old Serkan Yıldırım and 14-year-old Kasım Yıldırım, who were under the tree at the time, were severely affected by the strike. A child identified as M.Y., who was with them, was also seriously injured in the tragedy.
Upon receiving reports, medical teams were quickly dispatched to the scene. After receiving initial treatment in the schoolyard, the injured children were immediately transported to nearby hospitals.
Despite all interventions by doctors, Serkan Yıldırım and Kasım Yıldırım could not be saved at Ergani State Hospital. The treatment of M.Y., who was transferred to Diyarbakır Gazi Yaşargil Training and Research Hospital in critical condition, is ongoing, and it has been reported that their health status remains serious.
Authorities announced that an investigation into the area where the incident occurred has been launched.
