Location and date for the meeting between Erdoğan and Assad have been set

In recent weeks, AKP Chairman and President Erdoğan had stated that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could be hosted in Turkey or that the meeting could take place in a third country.

Following this statement by Erdoğan, a source speaking to Dilara Aslan from Daily Sabah said, "The first meeting between Erdoğan and Assad is planned to be held in Moscow, the capital of Russia."

While the source indicated that the meeting could take place in August, the Foreign Ministry stated that the claim should be directed to the Presidency.

Stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin is planned to mediate the talks, the source added, "Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani may be invited to the meeting. Iran will most likely not be invited."

According to information obtained from diplomatic sources, it was learned that the reports claiming President Erdoğan would meet with Syrian President Assad in Moscow do not reflect the truth.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

AKP Chairman and President Erdoğan had expressed his intention to invite Assad to Turkey in a statement he made on July 7.

Erdoğan had said, "The moment Bashar al-Assad takes a step toward improving relations with Turkey, we will show that same approach toward him. We will extend our invitation, and God willing, with this invitation, we want to bring Turkey-Syria relations back to the same point they were at in the past."

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, for his part, had emphasized that he viewed the statements regarding the development of relations with Turkey positively, but that this meeting would not take place without rules.
