Mahir Polat's brother reacts to Yılmaz Tunç: 'If he were your brother' - 'He is a detainee, not a convict'

Addressing Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç, Turgay Polat said, "Mr. Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç, my brother is a detainee, not a convict. While it is humanly possible for him to be tried under other judicial control processes, why are you withholding this humane step from Mahir Polat?"

In his statement, tagging Minister Tunç, Polat expressed the following:

"Mr. Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç, I want to ask you only one thing: If Mahir Polat were your brother, and his blood pressure was 24 (a risk of death) in a cell in the middle of the night, and this risk was constantly hanging over your head.

If he had to call the prison guards from his cell, wait for an hour in the infirmary, and then be sent to the hospital in a closed vehicle for another hour. God forbid, if he had luckily returned from an irreversible point during this time, could you still write the same sentences?

My brother is a detainee, not a convict. While it is humanly possible for him to be tried under other judicial control processes, why are you withholding this humane step from Mahir Polat?"

WHAT HAPPENED?

In a statement today, Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç said regarding IMM Deputy Secretary General Mahir Polat, who has serious health problems and is being held in Silivri Prison, "His health checks and medical treatment are continuing at the Marmara Closed Penal Execution Institution."

Tunç added the following:

"Some speculative posts and allegations are being brought to the agenda regarding the health status of IMM Deputy Secretary General Mahir Polat, who is being held as a detainee within the scope of the investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

The health status of detainee Mahir Polat, who received his first intervention at the institution's polyclinic on March 29, 2025, following health complaints, and subsequently underwent all necessary examinations and treatments in full by specialist physicians at the Mehmet Akif Ersoy Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital, is being carefully monitored by physicians.

During this process, the detainee, who was discharged from the hospital upon the approval of the physicians, continues his health checks and medical treatment at the Marmara Closed Penal Execution Institution.

As of today, the aforementioned detainee has been transferred to the hospital at the Marmara Penal Execution Institutions Campus for the assessment of his health status, and it has been decided to transfer him to the Council of Forensic Medicine in accordance with the Health Board Decision taken following the examinations conducted there.

In all these processes, all checks of the detainee are carried out in full in accordance with the reports of the physicians performing his treatment. Allegations to the contrary do not reflect the truth.

It is important to state that; access to health services for all detainees and convicts in penal execution institutions is meticulously provided within the framework of legal guarantees. There is no negligence or delay in this regard."
