Man whose wife and 5 children drowned in canal arrested

According to the information obtained, the incident occurred on May 6, 2023, in Şanlıurfa. The car with license plate 31 B 7008, driven by Hasan Çetin, plunged into an irrigation canal on the Göbeklitepe road while they were returning from a rural neighborhood they had visited as guests. 

While the driver, Hasan Çetin, escaped the car with minor injuries, his wife Özlem (31) and their children Asmin (11), Aysun (9), Ecem (5), İbrahim (4), and Müslüm (1) drowned and lost their lives.

Hasan Çetin, who was taken into custody after his treatment at the hospital, was released after his statement was taken.

IT WAS ALLEGED THAT THE INCIDENT WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT

Hasan Çetin, whose wife and 5 children died, married another woman during this period. The family of the late Özlem Çetin participated in a television program and alleged that the incident was not an accident.

Acting upon the allegations, police teams took Hasan Çetin into custody.

After being referred to the courthouse following his procedures at the police station, the individual was released by the duty magistrate under judicial control conditions.

ARRESTED

Deepening the investigation, security forces obtained new evidence and took Hasan Çetin back into custody last night under the instruction of the prosecutor's office.

The individual, whose procedures at the police station were completed, was arrested and sent to prison on charges of "causing the death of more than one person."

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
