Martyred after exposure to methane gas: It has emerged that Contracted Private Özkan Özkanlı was helping orphans
It has been revealed that Infantry Contracted Private Özkan Özkanlı, one of the 12 soldiers who were martyred after being exposed to methane gas in the Claw-Lock Operation region in northern Iraq, was orphaned at a young age and had been supporting another orphan since he began his military service.
While search efforts were underway for the remains of First Lieutenant Nuri Melih Bozkurt, who was martyred in 2022 at the 852-meter-high hill in northern Iraq as part of the Claw-Lock Operation, a group of soldiers was exposed to methane gas in a cave.
While it was initially announced that 5 soldiers had been martyred, the Ministry of National Defense announced in the morning hours that the number of martyrs had risen to 12. A technical investigation into the cause of the gas leak and the incident has been launched.

One of the heroic soldiers who was martyred in the methane gas tragedy was Infantry Contracted Private Özkan Özkanlı, who was registered to the village of Namlıkışla in the Ortaköy district of Aksaray.
Having lost his mother and father when he was just a child, Özkanlı grew up under difficult conditions. It has emerged that Özkanlı, who began his military service carrying the pain of being an orphan, was supporting another orphan. Those close to him stated that Özkanlı regularly sent money from his salary to help a child in need.
