Mayor killed in armed attack was reportedly set to join the AKP

The incident occurred yesterday morning around 10:00 a.m. in the TOKİ district of Balışeyh.

According to information obtained, Mayor Şen was traveling in his official vehicle to inspect ongoing work in the district when he was subjected to an armed attack by his cousin, Erdem Şen, with whom he had a feud.

Mayor Şen, who was in the vehicle with his driver Mikayil Çelikkol (40), Ömer Şengül (42), and Koray Kaya (45), was critically wounded in the attack.

Şen and his driver Çelikkol lost their lives at the Yüksek İhtisas Hospital, where they had been rushed. The treatment of the other two injured individuals continues at the Faculty of Medicine Hospital.

The assailant was taken into custody by police teams in front of the municipal building following the incident. The funeral of Hilmi Şen (50), who was married and a father of two, will be held at the Central Mosque in Balışeyh, where he will be laid to rest.

HE WAS PREPARING TO JOIN THE AKP

Hilmi Şen, who was elected Mayor of Balışeyh from the New Welfare Party in the March 31 local elections, had resigned about 3 months ago in reaction to statements made against AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan following developments within the party. It has been learned that Şen was preparing to join the AKP and was planning to announce his participation in the coming days.
