Mehmet Uçum claimed 'Erdoğan did not threaten judges,' but the archives reveal a 'threat': He was sent to Bayrampaşa Prison

Uçum stated that following the conviction of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, parallels have been drawn between him and President Tayyip Erdoğan.

In a post on his social media account titled "Imitations Continue to Exalt the Original!", Mehmet Uçum said, "With the recent investigations, the similarity between President Erdoğan and İmamoğlu is being brought to the agenda once again."

Claiming that IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has targeted the judiciary, judges, and prosecutors, Mehmet Uçum stated, "Despite facing severe judicial injustices (such as the sentence for a poem, the closure case, and the 367 ruling), President Erdoğan never uttered a word that could be considered an insult or threat against prosecutors, judges, or courts."

HE WENT TO PRISON FOR 'INSULTING AND THREATENING A JUDGE'

AKP Chairman and President Erdoğan first entered prison 36 years ago after being convicted on charges of insulting a judge.

According to Gazete Pencere, during the local elections on March 26, 1989, Tayyip Erdoğan was the Welfare Party's candidate for Mayor of Beyoğlu. After losing the election, Erdoğan arrived at the election board with Rasim Şimşek, a police commissioner in Beyoğlu, and party members. Claiming that the elections were rigged, Erdoğan alleged that the head of the ballot box, 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance Judge Nazmi Özcan, was 'intoxicated' and attempted to take him to the forensic medicine institute.

Following the incident, at the instruction of Election Board Chairman Nazmi Özcan, members serving on the Beyoğlu District Election Board—Ahmet Aslan (Beyoğlu Property Directorate official), Nafiz Sayber (Beyoğlu Special Provincial Administration Director), İsmail Atak (Commissioner at Hasköy Police Station), Mehmet Kiraz (ballot box official), Nadir Tunceli (ballot box official), Soner Kalkan (Beyoğlu 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance Clerk and 2nd District Election Board Bureau Chief), and Tahsin Selçuk—drew up a report and recorded the event.

"I WILL DRAG YOU, I WILL BURN YOU"

In his statement, Soner Kalkan said:

“I was working as a bureau chief at the 2nd Election Board. I was on duty on the day of the incident. There had been an objection. We were counting. It was around 04:00. I was writing the decision. Meanwhile, a person named Tayyip Erdoğan entered with a few people. He threatened the Election Board Chairman by saying, ‘Look at yourself, you drunk man. Look at this justice. Who has it been left to? I will burn you. I will send you all to forensic medicine, (addressing the judge) I will drag you. I will burn you.’”

Following the complaint by the Beyoğlu District Election Board, a lawsuit was filed against Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, seeking a prison sentence of 18 months to two years.

WARRANT FOR ARREST IN ABSENTIA

Erdoğan was brought to the Beyoğlu Courthouse under police escort on March 31, 1989. After his statement was taken, Erdoğan was referred to the court with a request for his arrest. Realizing he was going to be arrested, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan left the court's waiting room. Following the incident, an arrest warrant in absentia was issued for Erdoğan.

SENT TO BAYRAMPAŞA PRISON

Erdoğan appeared at the first hearing on April 27. Erdoğan's lawyer was Şevket Kazan, who later became Minister of Justice. Following the hearing, the Beyoğlu Criminal Court of First Instance arrested Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and sent him to Bayrampaşa Prison. Erdoğan, who remained in prison until May 4, 1989, appeared before the judge again. The court released Erdoğan on 500,000 TL bail. At the end of the trial, the court sentenced Erdoğan to 6 months in prison and a 20,000 TL fine for the crime of insulting a judge.
